Join Ricky Prebble (Pākehā/Tangata Tiriti) as he shares stories from the past and explores how histories of occupation and power are remembered in the names and landscapes of Te Whanganui-a-Tara. The history of Māori settlement and the impacts of colonisation on Māori, the whenua and waterways are a focus of the tour.
We’ll start at Pukeahu Education Centre, which is the historic Suzanne Aubert creche. Feel free to bring your own lunch.
Following a whakawhanaungatanga in the Education Centre we’ll head outside and over the road to the old Hauwai swamp
(current Basin Reserve) before following the Waitangi stream as it flows beneath our feet towards the harbour.
The tour finishes up at Te Aro Park.

Ricky Prebble (Pākehā/Tangata Tiriti) works as an Educator/Historian for Manatū Taonga (Ministry for Culture and Heritage). His background is in secondary education and he has taught history and social studies for over 10 years. He enjoys stories from the past and exploring historical ideas like change and continuity. He is interested in the way power works and how the past and the present interact and shape one another. He believes mātauranga Māori is essential for living well with others and the planet and he loves working with taonga pūoro (Māori musical instruments).
